A statistic for Ted....

Did you know that in the U.S., golf courses take up an area twice the size of the state of Delaware? I didn't. Now I do.

  • Interesting, where did you read/hear that? (Please don't say NPR.)

I looked up how many golf courses there are in the U.S. from the National Golf Foundation, and they list less than 15,000 courses in the U.S. (18-hole equivalent).

Can anyone find a useful average size for an 18-hole golf course? I think 100 acres is generous, which counts the green (sic) space around the actual course.

Using this average, there is about as much land operated by golf courses (but not actual golf courses) as a Delaware.

Want another interesting statistic? All of the golf courses of Florida and Georgia could fit in my county.

What was up with the Doors anyway? I just don't get it.
    Catchy, though.

  • I got the statistic from a chapter of Terry Jordan (R.I.P.) et al.'s cultural geography book that I'm reviewing for the next edition - don't know what their original source was. And what's up with being spammed on our own blog?

  • I was fooled for awhile into thinking The Doors were cool. Until I listened to them for awhile. Man. Just about the worst stuff ever. Excepting Jimmy Buffet, The Eagles, Rod Stewart (why is everyone trying to get me to buy that album, everywhere I go (in cyberland)?).

  • What? The Doors were hacks? What do you mean? How can you listen to lines like these and not feel a sense of awe at the expressive power of the English language:
"You know that it would be untrue/you know that I would be a liar/if I wuz to say to you/girl we couldn't get much higher/come on baby light my fire."
Hey, at least they didn't try to rhyme "desire" with "fire", or "rain" with "pain".

I must admit, I have always liked the line from "Riders on the Storm":
"There's a killer on the road/his brain is squirmin' like a toad."

  • Ted Rules. I dunno what's up with the spam comments. But remember in July, (the 18th to be exact), I joked about the way path buz z o met er not being around in November? Look below. Dude, it died, and it is almost November.

I spam-spelled their name in case one of those authors started cyber stalking us again, that was creepy.
